Oregon Ag Fest is an event geared toward kids and families to teach them more about Oregon agriculture via hands-on activities, entertainment, and the chance to interact with family farmers and ranchers. Farm Bureau is a premier sponsor of the event, held at the state fairgrounds the last weekend in April.

About 18,000 people attended Ag Fest this year, and the vast majority of them visited OFB’s booth.

Organized by the OFB Ag Education Committee, chaired by OFB Board member Mickey Killingsworth, Farm Bureau’s booth is an annual favorite, crowded with fest-goers from opening to close. Farm Bureau members and FFA students worked side-by-side to help attendees make their own Dirt Baby, aka “a farmer’s version of a Chia Pet” that demonstrates how seeds become plants. More than 2,900 Dirt Babies were made over the course of two days.

The booth also offered a play area for kids, with a corn pool and ag-themed books and toys, and featured a variety of ag education materials. New this year was a display and fact sheet about GMOs that was well received.

Between the Oregon Ag Fest special education day on Thursday, prep for that event and Ag Fest, booth setup, two days of making Dirt Babies, and tear-down, many volunteers were involved in this event. A few Ag Fest organizers commented that Farm Bureau always has the largest number of volunteers of any group present. No surprise to us!

The OFB Ag Education Committee also thanks the following sponsors of this year’s Ag Fest booth. It takes a lot of supplies to make 2,900 Dirt Babies and offer an array of ag-education giveaways. The donations were very much appreciated.
