Teachers Invited to Attend Summer Agriculture Institute
March 30, 2009
Planning is underway for the 2009 Summer Agriculture Institute (referred to as SAI) is a 3-credit course offered through Oregon State University (OSU) with a choice of two sessions held annually. For 2009, Session #1 will be held the week of June 21-26, on the OSU campus in Corvallis and Session #2 will be held July 12-17, at the Eastern Oregon University campus in La Grande and the Eastern Oregon Agriculture Research Center in Union. The course is a week-long, graduate level class for K-12 educators with little or no background in agriculture.

The Oregon Farm Bureau wants to inform consumers that despite what they may have heard over the years, buying a fresh Christmas tree is a better environmental choice than buying a plastic tree.
Why? Live trees from Oregon are local, renewable, recyclable, are not made from petroleum, nor did they use the energy to be shipped half way around world from China.

Classic Thanksgiving Dinner Still Affordable
November 13, 2008
Menu items for a classic Thanksgiving dinner including turkey, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie and all the basic trimmings will cost just a bit more this year, but remain affordable, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.
AFBF’s 23rd annual informal price survey of classic items found on the Thanksgiving Day dinner table indicates the average cost of this year’s feast for 10 is $44.61, a $2.35 price increase from last year’s average of $42.26.

Retail food prices at the supermarket increased in the third quarter of 2008, according to the latest American Farm Bureau Federation Marketbasket Survey. The informal survey shows the total cost of 16 basic grocery items in the third quarter of 2008 was $48.68, up about 4 percent or $2.01 from the second quarter of 2008.

The informal survey shows the total cost of 16 basic grocery items in the first quarter of 2008 was $45.03, up about 8 percent or $3.42 from the fourth quarter of 2007.

The cost of food in America remains affordable. According to the latest statistics compiled by the Agriculture Department’s (USDA’s) Economic Research Service, American families and individuals currently spend, on average, just under 10 percent of their disposable personal income for food.
Applying that statistic to the calendar year means the average household will have earned enough disposable income -- that portion of income available for spending or saving -- to pay for its annual food supply in about 36 days, according to the Oregon Farm Bureau.
